Million-step Monday — walking for (public) health

picture disc.Jay Noren, M.D., dean of the College of Public Health, shows a litte team spirit by wearing a T-shirt for the CoPHING Walkers, his team in the UNMC 1 Million Step Challenge, while addressing the college at its summer luncheon.

The COPH has about 70 walkers and numerous teams in the challenge. Dr. Noren, of course, believes the CoPHING Walkers will be the college’s top-stepping team.

Kathy Minikus of the college’s department of health services research and administration helps keep COPH walkers moving with a weekly e-mail note she sends letting trekkers know where they may be in Nebraska if they have walked certain numbers of steps.

“I may say something like ‘if you have walked approximately 380,000 steps or 190 miles, you might be in Niobrara,’ ” Minikus said. “The file I send out also will have some history, interesting facts and pictures of the spot mentioned.”

So far her notes have detailed step distance and informational tidbits about Beaver Crossing, Fairbury, Wahoo, Ponca, Brownville, Norfolk, Aurora, Grand Island, St. Paul, Dannebrog and Niobrara.

“We are going to be at Chimney Rock at the end of six months then start working our way back across the state,” Minikus said.

The following is a list of UNMC employees who have recently reached one of the 250,000-step markers in the 1 Million Step Challenge. Send an e-mail to today@unmc.edu with your name, department and tell us what step milestone you reached and we’ll post it on the list.
