Minorities, low-income, rural and underserved populations have a higher rate of complications and death from cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke and HIV/AIDS.

That is why UNMC is teaming up with the Urban League to offer free health screenings.

The sixth annual Men’s Day is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Urban League Family Resource Center, 30th and Lake streets.

Screenings include prostate cancer, diabetes, blood pressure and HIV. Participants will also be offered free flu shots.

“This has been a very successful event,” said Ira Combs, UNMC community nurse liaison. “Last year, we administered over 115 flu shots and screened 42 men for prostate cancer.”

In addition to the screenings, three information groups will present information about prostate cancer, erectile dysfunction and research in the minority community.

“Some diseases affect people with diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds and cultures differently,” said David Grandison, M.D., director of UNMC’s Center for Reducing Health Disparities. “Therefore, it is important that we include diverse racial and ethnic populations in research study to evaluate effective disease management and treatment.”

UNMC’s Center for Reducing Health Disparities aims to reduce and eventually eliminate health disparities among disadvantaged groups through an emphasis on preventative care and partnerships within communities.
