Million-step Monday — Kim Minino to be honored Thursday

Call for October step totals

Today is the final day for UNMC employees to submit step totals in order to earn the Gold and Silver Shoe awards. To be eligible, send an e-mail to today@unmc.edu with your name and October step total. The winners will be announced in next week’s Million-step Monday article.

Kim Minino, who was one of the first UNMC employees to finish the 1 Million Step Challenge, will be honored at dinner Thursday with the William M. Kizer Light of Wellness Award.

Minino, a telecommunications analyst in the UNMC Information Technology Services Department, will be one of 15 Omaha-area professionals to receive the award.

Aside from a walking regimen that allowed her to rack up 1 million steps in just more than two months, Minino also recently participated in a 60-mile walk in Chicago to raise awareness for breast cancer research.

Keynote speakers at the Light of Wellness event will be Amy Hildreth and Marty Wolff, who were cast on NBC’s hit reality show, “The Biggest Loser.”

The dinner, which begins at 6 p.m. at the Lauritzen Gardens, will highlight the achievements of 15 members of the Omaha business community that have best modeled successful changes in their health habits as a result of their companies’ wellness programs.

The Light of Wellness Award was created to recognize the founder and inspiration for worksite wellness in America, Omaha-native and business leader William M. Kizer.

Kizer founded the Wellness Council of the Midlands in 1982 and the Wellness Councils of America, the national non-profit organization, in 1987. He is chairman emeritus of Central States Indemnity. Nominees have to meet criteria in five categories including social, physical, intellectual, spiritual and emotional health.

“In order to be nominated for the award, these individuals had to demonstrate leading a healthy lifestyle and then act as role models for others,” said Howie Halperin, executive director of WELCOM. “They are the models of what Bill Kizer envisioned for worksite wellness and the positive impact it can have on individuals and the success of their companies.”
