Core Facility Focus on the Cell Analysis Facility

The Cell Analysis Facility uses several laser-based pieces of equipment, such as this FACSVantage DiVa cell sorter, to assist with vaccine validation, drug discovery, high throughput screening and other tasks.

The Cell Analysis Facility is one of several Core facilities available for use by UNMC researchers.

Core facilities, sometimes called shared resources, provide sophisticated, expensive technology and expertise that no single lab would have the financial resources to purchase and learn. These fee-for-service resources help investigators maximize productivity by providing access to technologies, services and scientific consultation at a reasonable cost. Core facilities also provide stability, reliability, cost-effectiveness and quality control that would be difficult to achieve otherwise.

Core facility name: Cell Analysis Facility

Core facility location: Durham Research Center, Room 1056

Services offered: The Cell Analysis Facility is a full-service flow cytometry and cell sorting facility providing research flow cytometry services to investigators in the academic and corporate sectors. The laboratory functions as a fee for service entity open for support of basic and clinical research.

Flow Cytometry has been used for applications such as vaccine validation, drug discovery and high throughput screening, immune system surveillance, and cancer cell signaling. The Cell Analysis Facility offers a wide range of flow cytometry based assays including 1-15 color multi-parametric immunofluorescent studies, DNA-based cell cycle analyses, bead based immunoassays, cell sorting by flow cytometric and magnetic bead methods, and comprehensive data analysis.

The Cell Analysis Facility personnel are extensively experienced in all types of flow cytometry procedures, their combined expertise spans more than 50 years. This expertise is available to assist you in designing flow cytometry applications tailored to your needs.

Featured equipment: Instrumentation includes:

  • 3 B-D FACSCalibur dual-laser cytometers capable of four color, 8 parameter analysis;
  • A B-D LSR II four-laser cytometer capable of 13 color, 15 parameter analysis;
  • A B-D FACSArray dual-laser bioanalyzer capable of four color, plate-based multiplex assays;
  • A B-D FACSAria four-laser, high speed digital cell sorter capable of 15 color, 17 parameter analysis;
  • A B-D FACSVantage DiVa three-laser, high speed cell sorter capable of 6 color, 10 parameter analysis;
  • A Miltenyi AuotMACs automated magnetic cell separation system; and
  • PC and Mac based workstations for off-line data analysis.

Testimonials: The Cell Analysis Facility served approximately79 different laboratories and/or corporations this past year. The facility provided 6,853 hours of service, which resulted in 102 scientific publications during this same period. Some of the recent work supported by the facility has included validation of unique model systems for the study of HIV infection, neurodegeneration and vaccine testing as well as new diagnostic and prognostic indicators for cancer therapy.
