Employees, students must get new identification cards

UNMC employees and students, as well as UMA employees, will need to obtain new identification cards over the next couple of months. After Sept. 1, current ID cards will no longer be a valid form of identification on campus.

“Security is the number one reason for re-carding,” said Keith Swarts, director of Business Services at UNMC. “We certainly expect to increase the number of card-accessed areas in the next few years, and we need to make sure that everyone who will be assigned to go into those areas has a proper ID.”

Re-carding schedule

The following schedule (based on an employee’s last name) is a guideline for obtaining new cards, however employees and students are encouraged to come prior to their scheduled date.

  • A-E — June 24 to July 5
  • F-J — July 8 to July 19
  • K-O — July 22 to Aug. 2
  • P-T — Aug. 5 to Aug. 16
  • U-Z — Aug. 19 to Aug. 30

Steve Hinrichs, M.D., UNMC professor and the senior official in charge of providing leadership on bioterrorism preparedness for the University of Nebraska, agreed that photo identification and limited access to secure areas are essential for a safe campus.

“I would encourage all employees to get their new identification cards as soon as possible,” Dr. Hinrichs said. “The more compliance there is on this type of thing, the safer our campus will be.”

There are several other reasons to get the new ID card, said Ken Tilford, manager of the UneCard Program office. For example, the new UNMC identifier and the opportunity to re-take pictures will provide a more attractive looking card. As an added benefit Metro Health Federal Credit Union will be donating $100 per week for cash drawings for those individuals who have obtained their new cards. Winners will be announced in UNMC Today.

A new card in minutes

The re-carding process is very simple and will take less than five minutes. Individuals should park on the south side of the Student Life Center building and enter through the Center’s south doors. Signs will provide directions to the UneCard office.

The following schedule (based on an employee’s last name) is a guideline for obtaining new cards, but Tilford stressed that employees and students can come to the UneCard office prior to their scheduled date.

  • A-E — June 24 to July 5
  • F-J — July 8 to July 19
  • K-O — July 22 to Aug. 2
  • P-T — Aug. 5 to Aug. 16
  • U-Z — Aug. 19 to Aug. 30
