Actor and Omaha native John Beasley has opened the John Beasley Theater on 30th and Q streets in Omaha. UNMC employees can get discounted tickets to the Feb. 8 opening of “Gem of the Ocean” at the new theater.

UNMC is sponsoring the opening night of the next play at the John Beasley Theater, and employees will have the opportunity on Monday to purchase discounted tickets for the production.

Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for the Feb. 8 opening of “Gem of the Ocean,” by August Wilson.

Two tickets will be available to each employee for $5 apiece. Tickets will be sold, beginning at 11:30 a.m., near the Storz Pavilion on Monday.

This will precede the noontime presentation of actor John Beasley, who is delivering the commemorative address to honor slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Employees are asked to bring cash or check to pay for the tickets.

“Gem of the Ocean” was nominated for five Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway.

August Wilson is a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright whose 10-play cycle chronicles African American life in the 20th century. Each play depicts a different decade.

“Gem of the Ocean” was the first play in a series of ten. Wilson finished his last play just before his death in October 2005.

The John Beasley Theater is at 30th and Q Streets in Omaha.
