Researcher talks about UNMC’s role in discovery

Novel technology developed by UNMC’s Paul Dunman, Ph.D., played a critical role in Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s discovery of a novel way to inhibit and potentially kill the deadly staph bacteria by starving it of the nutrients it requires to survive.

Dr. Dunman explains how his technology confirmed Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s discovery of a protein that removes some key nutrients that staph bacteria need to grow.

UNMC graduate student Kelsi Anderson traveled to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to perform studies using UNMC’s novel technology. UNMC’s role helped confirm Vanderbilt’s discovery of a protein that starves staph of key nutrients it needs to survive.

Dr. Dunman explains the technology he developed that makes it possible to analyze bacteria (such as staph) at the molecular level. Doing so, makes it possible to understand the genetic makeup of the organism, which can lead to more effective treatments.
