UNMC, Urban League lead youth health care conference

UNMC and the Urban League of Nebraska will host an African American Youth health care conference on Thursday. The first of its kind conference in the Omaha metropolitan area is aimed at encouraging black high school students to consider health care careers.

Omaha area black high school students are encouraged to sign up to attend this conference.

Rubens Pamies, M.D., UNMC vice chancellor of academic affairs, Thomas Warren, president and CEO of the Urban League of Nebraska, Inc., and Preston Love Jr., an Omaha civic leader, will speak to students about college and its health care career opportunities.

“It is critical to take challenging science classes to prepare for a career in health care,” Dr. Pamies said. “This conference gives us an opportunity to guide students early in their pre-college years and create mentoring relationships with them, which, hopefully, will lead them back to UNMC for their professional education.”

“I believe it is important to expose students to a variety of career choices,” Warren said. “This conference will assist students in strengthening their academic, social and cultural development while being introduced to a college environment.”

In addition, the seminar will feature financial aid and scholarship information. Students will have an opportunity to participate in interactive informational sessions from representatives in the UNMC Colleges of Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, the School of Allied Health Professions, Office of Student Equity and Multicultural Affairs and the Omaha Urban Area Health Education Center (AHEC).

The event will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the College of Nursing’s Cooper Auditorium.

“We are very excited to offer this conference to African American Omaha youth,” said Dani Eveloff, UNMC College of Nursing recruitment coordinator. “Our goal is for this to be an annual event.”

Interested students must have a signed permission slip from their parents and high school counselors to attend.
