40 graduate from 2008 Management Development Series

You’ll find them in hallways, cubicles and offices.

Leaders exist at every level of the organization, said UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., and present a vision of where the organization should be.

“One of the key concepts in the UNMC Management Series is that everyone on campus is called to be a leader.”

“Leaders learn from observing,” Dr. Maurer told 40 graduates of UNMC’s 2008 Management Development Series last month.

The eight-month series provides UNMC supervisors, managers and administrators with the tools to become highly effective leaders. It also provides participants with an understanding of UNMC policies and procedures.

Sponsored by UNMC Human Resources, with assistance from the Center for Continuing Education, the Management Development series covered such topics as leadership, communication, compliance, teamwork, managing change, performance management, employee motivation and diversity.

“The program has been designed to give managers and supervisors the tools to succeed in their positions, as well as engage their staff,” said Carmen Sirizzotti, division director of Human Resources’ employee relations. “The support of UNMC’s upper level management to this program is outstanding and one example of how UNMC invests in its employees.”

In addition to Dr. Maurer, the following campus leaders mentored participants while sharing personal experiences for successful management:

  • John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the College of Medicine;
  • Bruce Buehler, M.D., former director of the Munroe-Meyer Institute;
  • Virginia Tilden, D.N.Sc., dean of the College of Nursing;
  • David Crouse, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor and executive associate dean for Graduate Studies;
  • Myrna Newland, M.D., director of the UNMC Equity Office;
  • Don Leuenberger, vice chancellor for Business and Finance; and
  • John Russell, assistant vice chancellor for Human Resources.

UNMC’s Bruce Gordon, M.D., Sheila Wrobel, J.D., and Susan Kraft Mann led one of the monthly interactive discussions and were joined by external consultants Cy Wakeman, Brian Brim and Grant Mussman of Gallup Consultants, Duane Salonen of Dale Carnegie Training and Patique Collins of the SilverStone Group.

“One of the key concepts in the UNMC Management Series is that everyone on campus is called to be a leader,” said Linda Love, faculty development coordinator with the Center for Continuing Education. “Through the sessions and discussions, participants had the opportunity to reflect upon their skills, strengths and challenges and gain a sense of empowerment in how they can impact the culture at UNMC.”
