Twenty-two students from eight different undergraduate and community college programs have joined the Institutional Development Award Program (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE)/ Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) program.

Established in 2001, the BRIN program was created to expose students to serious biomedical research, build a statewide biomedical research infrastructure between undergraduate and graduate institutions and to strengthen each undergraduate institution’s infrastructure and increase its capacity to conduct cutting-edge biomedical and behavioral research.

Today, we meet Kyla Ronhovde, one of the new BRIN scholars on campus.

Who is Kyla Ronhovde?

I will be entering my junior year at Doane College in Crete and I major in biochemistry. On campus I am involved in honor societies including Alpha Lambda Delta and Beta Beta Beta, and I am also a member of Gamma Phi Iota sorority.

Has science always been a part of your life?

Science has always been an interest for me so of course it has been a major part of my life. I have learned a lot through all of my experiences that started in elementary school with science fairs and progressed into a lab technician position at UNL for the past two years. I could not imagine not being able to be around science, I currently tutor students and will be teaching organic chemistry recitations this fall. I admit that I would rather take any science course over a history one any day.

How is it important to you?

Science is very important to me because it is my interest and my future career path.

Why did you choose to participate in the BRIN program?

I choose to participate in the BRIN program due to the many opportunities it presents for young scholars interested in research. The BRIN program allows students to explore their different interests in the biomedical sciences.

What do you hope to gain from the program?

The BRIN program can help me obtain my goals of where and what I want to accomplish in the years ahead. This program will provide me with a valuable core research foundation that is essential for graduate school. This program also will provide me an exceptional research opportunity extending not only for this summer but when I return to Doane for my junior and senior years.
