Lookin’ at U – NeEtta Gillespie

picture disc.Quick, think of five things others should know about you.

That’s the theme behind a series in UNMC Today called “Lookin’ at U.”

Each Thursday, we will randomly select a medical center employee to feature.

This week, we feature NeEtta Gillespie, a new media and Web coordinator in UNMC public affairs.

Here, in her own words, are five fun facts about NeEtta.

NeEtta Gillespie

  • I grew up in a small town in South Dakota called McIntosh. It is one mile from the North Dakota border and turned 100 last weekend.

  • I got married in Edinburgh, Scotland. My husband, a Texan named Aaron, and I have two kids, Madison and Austin.

  • I had a radio show in college.

  • I helped author a book with an Internet contest, “The World’s Greatest Proposals: 75 Stories of Love, Creativity and Spontaneity.”

  • My name, NeEtta, was inspired by a Russian leader. I come from a family of five, we came as such — two girls, a boy, two girls. My dad told my mom they had a pattern going and the next child would certainly be a boy. She pounded her fist on her hospital bed and told him, “No! No! No! No more kids!” It reminded my dad of the Cold War and Russian Premiere Nikita Khruschev pounding on the table with his shoe in the United Nations chambers saying, “Nyet, Nyet, Nyet!” (“No” in Russian.) They added an a on the end and that’s how I got my name.
