Twenty-two students from eight different undergraduate and community college programs have joined the Institutional Development Award Program (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE)/ Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) program.

Established in 2001, the BRIN program was created to expose students to serious biomedical research, build a statewide biomedical research infrastructure between undergraduate and graduate institutions and to strengthen each undergraduate institution’s infrastructure and increase its capacity to conduct cutting-edge biomedical and behavioral research.

Today, we meet McKenzie Jarecki, one of the new BRIN scholars on campus.

Who is McKenzie Jarecki?

I am a young woman from a small town in Nebraska who is a biology major at Creighton University. I love Nebraska and its great work ethic along with its focus on community. As a biology major at Creighton, I have been able to use that Nebraska work ethic inside and out of the classroom. I am very family oriented and appreciate all of the sacrifices that my family has made to help me excel.

Has science always been a part of your life?

Yes and no. I always found math and science easy so I guess you could say that it was, but I never would have dreamed that I would consider a career in science. After taking a few courses in biology in high school and in college, I knew that it was the right fit for me.

How is it important to you?

Science excites me. I enjoy learning and eagerly seek more knowledge within the field. I know that it is the field in which I will find a career that is fun, exciting and fulfilling.

Why did you choose to participate in the BRIN program?

The BRIN program is an excellent opportunity that is priceless. It presents numerous opportunities within the state of Nebraska for research and introduces young students like me to the research field. I know that the experience I gain in the two years of the program will help me decide what area of science is the best fit for me as well as provide me with the opportunity to engage in hands on learning. Like I said, the program and the experience that it provides are priceless.

What do you hope to gain from the program?

I hope to gain insight on my future career. I want to find a career that I am excited about and science excites me. I hope that this program will help me gain the experiences that will help me use my excitement of science in a career.
