Handouts will be available at the 11:30 a.m. session in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater. The Omaha Public Power District’s energy-saving session, originally scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 14, has been cancelled.

Employees are encouraged to stop by the Nebraska Cafe Tuesday, Aug. 13 during the lunch hour to learn more about the UNMC/NHS energy consumption campaign.

Energy-saving hints

  • Shut off your computer and monitor at night and on weekends. It requires less energy to start up a computer in the morning than to leave it running all night.
  • Turn off lights and computer monitor when leaving your office for more than 15 minutes. It is a myth that it is cheaper to leave fluorescent lights on than to switch them
off. And if you shut your lights off for one hour each working day, you’ll reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 14 pounds per year.
  • Use task lighting or daylight instead of ceiling lighting whenever possible.
  • Keep window coverings closed when direct sun is on windows. Close window coverings on weekends.
  • Whenever possible, use the stairs instead of the elevator. It not only saves energy, but also promotes health.
  • Use fans to circulate air in work areas.
  • Task lighting is recommended if it enables you to turn off your overhead lights.
  • Turn off lights when restrooms are not occupied.
  • Explore the purchase of high efficiency refrigerators and freezers for research areas.
