Air Force Surgeon General to visit his alma mater UNMC

Lt. Gen. James Roudebush, M.D., surgeon general of the United States Air Force, will be back in Nebraska on Wednesday to speak about advances in military medicine and to see the latest in advances in patient care and medical education.

Dr. Roudebush’s visit is part Omaha’s Air Force Week festivities. Omaha is one of three American cities participating in Air Force Week. Los Angeles and Philadelphia are the others.

Aug. 13 is Medical Day of Air Force Week. Dr. Roudebush will begin the day at a public round table in Bellevue, learning more about The Bellevue Medical Center.

The metro’s newest hospital is due to open in the fall of 2010. The 100-bed facility also will become one of the locations that will provide training to the U.S. Air Force’s family medicine physicians.

Dr. Roudebush will then proceed to Omaha for a visit to The Nebraska Medical Center and his medical school alma mater, UNMC.

As surgeon general of the Air Force, Dr. Roudebush serves as functional manager of the U.S. Air Force Medical Service. In this capacity, he advises the Secretary of the Air Force and Air Force Chief of Staff, as well as the assistant secretary of defense for health affairs on matters pertaining to the medical aspects of the air expeditionary force and the health of Air Force people. Dr. Roudebush has authority to commit resources worldwide for the Air Force Medical Service, to make decisions affecting the delivery of medical services, and to develop plans, programs and procedures to support worldwide medical service missions. He exercises direction, guidance and technical management of more than 43,100 people assigned to 75 medical facilities worldwide

The general entered the Air Force in 1975 after receiving a bachelor of medicine degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a doctor of medicine degree from UNMC. He completed residency training in family practice at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Medical Center, Ohio, in 1978, and aerospace medicine at Brooks Air Force Base, Texas, in 1984.




The UNMC Department of Family Medicine is hosting the surgeon general’s Grand Rounds presentation titled, “Air Force Medicine, Today and Tomorrow.”

Dr. Roudebush will speak about the latest advances in military medicine and the unique challenges posed by the War on Terror.

The surgeon general also will have the chance to see something unique in a civilian hospital, The Nebraska Medical Center’s Biocontainment Unit. The unit is currently the only center accessible to civilians in the United States equipped to safely care for anyone exposed to contagious and dangerous diseases.

The campus tour also will include a look inside UNMC’s newest gem, the Michael F. Sorrell Center, the new home of the UNMC College of Medicine.
