On Oct. 22 at 10:30 a.m., the UNMC College of Nursing will host a ceremonial groundbreaking for a building that will expand capacity to accept more nursing students and prepare more nursing faculty. It also will enable the college to expand its research program.

A $14 million, 43,000-square-foot facility will be built adjacent to the college’s current facility at 42nd Street and Dewey Avenue. Omaha philanthropists Ruth and Bill Scott provided the lead gift for the free-standing Center for College of Nursing Sciences. Projected opening is March 2010.

UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., will be joined during the ceremony by other leaders from the University of Nebraska and UNMC, as well as local and state government, including Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy, Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey, University of Nebraska Regent Randy Ferlic, M.D., University of Nebraska President James B. Milliken and Virginia Tilden, D.N.Sc., dean of UNMC College of Nursing.

The groundbreaking ceremony will be held on the east side of the UNMC College of Nursing at 42nd Street and Dewey Ave. For those who can’t attend in person, the ceremony will be available to watch on-line at 3 p.m. on the day of the event, at www.unmc.edu.
