Discussing cyber security — what if something goes wrong?

(EDITOR’S NOTE: October is National Cyber Security Awareness as Month. The following is the second in a series of stories from UNMC Information Technology Services that highlight aspects of cyber security.)

Despite everyone’s diligent work, sometimes things do go wrong. What should you do if you become aware of an “incident?”

If you become aware of an incident, immediately report it to the Campus Privacy Officer, Sheila Wrobel, at 559-6767; the Campus Information Security Officer, Sharon Welna at 559-2545; or the ITS HelpDesk at 559-7700.

A privacy incident would involve improper use or disclosure of confidential information and could include:

  • Evidence of tampering with data;
  • Theft or loss of computer systems and portable devices;
  • System is overloaded to the point it is not responsive (denial of service attack on the network);
  • Web site defacement;
  • Unauthorized access or repeated attempts at unauthorized access (from either internal or external sources);
  • Social engineering incidents;
  • Virus attacks that cause workstations or servers to be inoperable;
  • E-mail that includes threats or material that could be considered harassment;
  • Unauthorized acquisitions of unencrypted computerized data that compromises the security, confidentiality or integrity of personal information;
  • Discovery of unauthorized or missing hardware or software in your area; and/or
  • Other incidents that could undermine or raise concern about the stability or reliability of the campus information technology systems.
