Campus food drive ends Monday

Challenge update

For those departments that took the public affairs’ challenge of filling 10 bags (we’re talking to you pharmaceutical and experimental neuroscience, family medicine and UNMCP Compliance), we’ve got six bags filled and will likely blow right past 10 bags by Monday.

We still welcome challenges from other departments who feel up to the task of matching or surpassing our total. Can your department fill more than 10 paper bags? If so, send an e-mail to today@unmc.edu with your department’s donation total and we’ll mention it in UNMC Today.

As of Tuesday, about 6,000 pounds of food had been collected during the “Our Heartiest Thanks!” food drive.

The drive brings together UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC Physicians, Clarkson College, Sodexo and Private Practice Associates in an effort to collect food and household items to donate to the Omaha Food Bank.

Blue barrels have been placed around each campus for food and household items to be dropped off.

Departments also have been given paper bags to fill. These bags can be taken to a drop off location (see below) once full. Bags will be delivered to each mail stop. Limited additional bags may be picked up at the UNMC Public Affairs office on the fifth floor of Swanson Hall.

Each year the food bank distributes between 5 and 7 million pounds of food. More than 300,000 children, families and seniors in Omaha will benefit from the items donated.

Some of the items the food bank needs are: canned meats such as tuna, chicken or ham; canned pasta; canned fruits and vegetables; dry beans; rice; “helper” products such as hamburger and tuna helper; pasta and sauce; peanut butter and jelly; baking products such as flour and sugar; ketchup; mustard; diapers; shampoo; toilet paper; laundry supplies and soap.
