Michael Murphy will peform today at noon as part of UNMC’s campus celebration of November being Native American Heritage Month.

Omaha Native and folk art singer, Michael Murphy, will kick off UNMC’s celebration of Native American Heritage Month with a performance today at noon in the Durham Research Center Auditorium.

The concert will be one of two events the Diversity Lectures and Cultural Arts Series will present on the UNMC campus in celebration of Native American Heritage Month, which is November.

Murphy has recorded five independent CDs; the two most recent are “Trail of Tears” and “Peace.” Along with his acclaimed guitar and native flute work on these albums, he is a very experienced singer and songwriter whose music often discusses socially conscious themes such as civil rights, peace and family values.

On Friday, a panel discussion with native advocates and health care providers titled “Dispelling the Myths and Stereotypes: Native Culture and Health-Seeking Behaviors” will be held in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater from noon to 1 p.m.

The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Donna Polk-Primm, executive director of the Nebraska Urban Indian Health Coalition.

Free sack lunches for the first 40 attendees will be provided at both events as well as door prizes. For additional information, please contact 559-7394 or lcunning@unmc.edu.
