Food drive ends today

Robin Taylor’s office in the Durham Research Center resembles a small grocery store thanks to the donations of the staff in the UNMC Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience during the “Our Heartiest Thanks!” food drive.

The drive ends today around noon.

As a group, UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center, UNMC Physicians, Clarkson College, Sodexo and Private Practice Associates, have far surpassed their collective goal of collecting one ton of food.

It remains to be seen if the group can break the Omaha Food Bank record of six tons collected in a single drive.

Departments that that took the public affairs challenge and collected more than 10 bags of food are encouraged to send their totals to today@unmc.edu and be recognized in an upcoming UNMC Today article. Pictures of your food stockpiles are welcome, too.

Each year the food bank distributes between 5 and 7 million pounds of food. More than 300,000 children, families and seniors in Omaha will benefit from the items donated.

Some of the items the food bank needs are: canned meats such as tuna, chicken or ham; canned pasta; canned fruits and vegetables; dry beans; rice; “helper” products such as hamburger and tuna helper; pasta and sauce; peanut butter and jelly; baking products such as flour and sugar; ketchup; mustard; diapers; shampoo; toilet paper; laundry supplies and soap.
