Tina Spencer, UNMC Manager of Parking and Cashiering Operations, has been named the permanent manager of the UNMC Bookstore.

Spencer retains her parking responsibilities but has given up the cashiering responsibility, said Deb Thomas, assistant vice chancellor for business and finance, in making the announcement.

This month, parking services will move from the administration building to the UNMC Bookstore in the Student Life Center, allowing Spencer to integrate her roles for the benefit of the campus community.

“I want to enhance our operations so we are the bookstore of choice for our students and faculty,” Spencer said. “The consolidation benefits new employees and creates a one-stop shop for students to get their ID badges, parking permits and books.”

The integration also allows Spencer to cross train staff, she said.

An expansion of the existing UNMC Bookstore is planned after construction ends on the Harold M. and Beverly Maurer Center for Public Health, Spencer said, and will allow for fitting rooms and additional retail space. She also is in charge of the bookstore’s satellite store in the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education.

Spencer has served as manager of parking since 1998 and as manager of cashiering operations since 1999. She formerly spent three years in hospital administration at University Hospital prior to the merger.

As bookstore manager, Spencer plans to promote the store’s products — whether apparel, books or gift items — to UNMC students and faculty, as well as the general public and health care professionals at other hospitals. She wants to increase the store’s visibility at continuing education conferences and enhance the products available for resale.

Cashiering will remain in the Administration Center, where Brock Steinbrink will serve as SAP support and cashiering supervisor.

“My new role will not diminish my commitment and my passion to parking,” Spencer said. “But, I love a challenge and, as manager of the UNMC Bookstore, I have an opportunity to develop the great potential that already exists. I want this (success) to be a win-win for UNMC, its students and employees.”
