Faculty development series focused on organizational leadership

(EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is from UNMC Continuing Education.)

The 2009 UNMC Organizational Leadership Series will be held Feb. 19, March 19 and April 23, all Thursdays, in the Sorrell Center, Room 4053.

This faculty development series is for any UNMC faculty members who aspire to positively impact productivity and culture at the medical center. Faculty may participate in this three-part series as a whole (recommended) or a single program. Early registration is suggested to secure your seat for this program.

The program aims to:

  • Distinguish unique qualities required to lead the organization of tomorrow, whether formally or informally;
  • Evaluate the actions, skills and strategies that leaders need to sustain a competitive advantage in today’s fast paced world; and
  • Develop leaders from where they are to where they will need to be as roles redefine and emerge in the institution.

A schedule of each program with a synopsis follows:

Thursday, Feb. 19 — “Conflict Management and Resolution” by
John Molidor, Ph.D., assistant dean at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and CEO of Flint Area Medical Education (FAME).

In leadership roles, conflict is unavoidable, yet with the proper approaches, conflict can hold a bounty of opportunity. While resolving conflict can be a stressful experience, committing to systematic problem solving behaviors can increase effective conflict resolution and foster winning results.

Understanding how perceptions of self and others influence communication and emotional control is critical for successful conflict management. Health care has become increasingly collaborative and interprofessional requiring skilled communicators invested in positive, productive relationships. Critical thinking inspired by conflict and refined by constructive dialogue offers one success indicator for future-minded organizations.

Thursday, March 19 — “Strategic Performance Management: More Than Just a Piece of Paper” by Brian Brim of The Gallup Organization, Inc.

Many managers and leaders dread the performance evaluation process, and because of this, important discussions between leaders and faculty are missed. One of the key skill sets for effective leadership is the ability to guide and manage unit performance by appropriately defining performance outcomes, communicating clear expectations as well as identifying pathways for individual success. An essential component in the process is the alignment of the individual efforts to the vision and goals of the department and the university. This presentation, conducted by Brian Brim, principal and consultant with the Gallup Organization, Inc., will offer practical inspiration on creating positive performance dialogues that are framed to promote a high-performance unit. Attendance at April’s session is not required but highly recommended.

Thursday, April 23 — Investing in Outcomes Based Performance Management by Brian Brim of The Gallup Organization, Inc.

The evaluation process is a means to an end, a purposeful quest toward peak performance. How does this process drive results? How do we gain momentum from those in and around our unit? Where does the line between subjective and objective performance evaluation fall? How is “performance” really measured? What do you do with an underperformer? How is accountability brought into the process? These important concepts will be open for discussion during the course of the event. Attendance at the March session is not required but highly recommended.

The programs will run from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Complimentary lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. with the course beginning shortly after.

For UNMC faculty, there is no fee to attend the courses in this series. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. To register, visit unmc.edu/facdev or call (402) 559-5929 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. CST.
