Franklin Thompson, Ed.D., will kick off the UNMC Diversity Lectures and Cultural Arts Series celebration of Black History Month on Thursday, Feb. 5 with a noon presentation titled “Things That Make You Go Hmmm … Missing Links to a Greater Understanding of Race Relations.”
Then, on Friday, Feb. 13, Galen Abdur-Razzaq — a master flutist who has played throughout the world for more than 30 years — will present a jazz performance titled “Notes at Noon.”
Both events are part of the UNMC Diversity Lectures and Cultural Arts Series and will be held in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater.
Dr. Thompson is an associate professor in the College of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and a two-time elected District 6 Representative for the Omaha City Council.
His academic areas of expertise are in human and race relations, multicultural education, urban education, working with at-risk youth, resiliency research and counseling.
Abdur-Razzaq — known onstage simply as Galen — is widely known and respected as an arranger, composer, director and educator who has performed and recorded with some of the world’s greatest musicians.
He has shared the stage with world-renowned artists such as Billy Taylor, Melba Moore, Sun Ra, John Patton and many others.
Galen will present a lecture/jazz performance that will take the audience through the history of jazz.
