Toy drive brings joy to thousands

December’s Pine Ridge Reservation Toy Drive, which was co-sponsored by UNMC, brought toys to 1,200 children on five American Indian Reservations as well as needy youngsters in the Omaha area.

Toys were distributed to the Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Santee, Winnebago and Omaha reservations during the drive, which also was co-sponsored by Omaha musician, Larry Dunn, who also is known as Lash LaRue.

“All in all, it was a very successful event. Many thanks to all for the wonderful generosity! It couldn’t be done without you.”

The drive also was supplemented with toy purchases of $5,000 from cash donations and about $500 in cash was donated to help with grocery purchases for 10 families.

The Porcupine Diabetes Clinic on Pine Ridge Reservation was given a donation of $600 to help with supplies, heating, and other operational costs.

Drive organizers also were able to purchase 60 pizzas for the kids and families at the Porcupine toy giveaway.
