Think Green — recovering heat, recouping costs

picture disc.Dedicated Heat Recovery Systems (DHRS) — which are capable of producing hot and chilled water simultaneously — will soon be installed in various buildings on campus, including Durham Research Center I and II.

The system redirects heat generated from refrigeration equipment to be used to heat water in other parts of the building. Typically, heat from refrigeration equipment is simply lost.

DHRS is projected to generate significant savings annually in operational costs, said officials within UNMC’s Facilities Management and Planning.

“DHRS is an example of UNMC efficiently using its resources and being a responsible steward of its environment,” said Nick Combs, director of maintenance, utilities and renovation.
