First female Navajo surgeon to speak at UNMC today

Lori Arviso Alvord, M.D.


Renowned American Indian doctor, Lori Arviso Alvord, M.D., will present “The Scalpel and the Silver Bear: Combining Western Medicine and Traditional Navajo Ceremonies to Create Healing Environments” today at 7 p.m. in the Durham Research Center Auditorium

Dr. Alvord was the first Navajo woman to be board certified in surgery.

A graduate of Stanford University School of Medicine, she serves as the associate dean of student and multicultural affairs at Dartmouth Medical School and as a general surgeon at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, Vt.
