James Lane, M.D., talks to members of the north Omaha diabetes support group about diabetic nerve damage.

The North Omaha Diabetes Support Group recently had the opportunity to hear from a local endocrinology expert, James Lane, M.D., associate professor and head of the diabetes center at UNMC.

Dr. Lane spoke to the group about diabetic neuropathy.

The North Omaha Diabetes Support Group was formed to provide support and information to individuals diagnosed with diabetes. The goal is to help group members acquire and maintain their maximum self-management goals, lower or maintain blood pressure, promote healthy nutrition choices and encourage exercise. Meeting those goals will decrease the incidence of diabetes related complications.

The group was started four years ago by Jackie Hill, UNMC clinical research coordinator, and Ira Combs, UNMC community nurse coordinator. Both work in the Center for Reducing Health Disparities in the College of Public Health.

The group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at Baker Place Clinic at 5050 Ames Ave.
