Toby Schonfeld, Ph.D., has received the College of Public Health’s inaugural Excellence in Teaching Award.

Dr. Schonfeld — associate professor of health care ethics and director of the Center for Humanities, Ethics and Society (CHES) — received the award Thursday during the college’s annual awards dinner.

“Toby strives to be a teacher who continuously improves her teaching and the students’ experience,” said Keith Mueller, Ph.D., interim dean of the College of Public Health. “Her student evaluations and glowing letters of reference from current and past students very strongly demonstrate that she always treats her students with respect, challenges their thinking and helps them become better professionals.”

More COPH awards

More from the COPH awards dinner will be published soon in UNMC Today.

Dr. Schonfeld’s commitment to teaching excellence also shines through in the fact that she publishes on teaching methodology, Dr. Mueller said.

Dr. Mueller said he was impressed by how Dr. Schonfeld maintains communication with many of her students and supports them in their endeavors even after they have graduated and moved on.

The new teaching award recognizes faculty members who make outstanding teaching contributions each academic year. The award winner is selected by the college’s committee for excellence in teaching.

As part of the award, Dr. Schonfeld will receive a one-time stipend of $3,500 to be used for personal or professional development.

In addition, her name will appear on a plaque outside the dean’s office in recognition of her achievement.
