Dedication ceremony

A dedication ceremony for the Durham Research Center II will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. The campus community is invited and is welcome to tour the new building following the ceremony. The ceremony will be webcast at http://www.unmc.edu/vcr/.

The following is a list of construction materials dug, poured, installed and otherwise utilized in DRC II’s construction:
  • 15,000 cubic yards of concrete — that’s enough concrete to pave a two-lane highway for 4.5 miles;
  • 45,000 cubic yards of excavation, including 4,500 truckloads and depths of 40 feet.
  • 1,350 tons of resteel and 35 tones of structural steel;
  • 435,000 square feet of form work — enough to cover nine football fields;
  • 23,000 square feet of precast;
  • 700 doors; and
  • 62,000 square feet of glass.

Also — in a move to be friendlier to the environment — the DRC II has a Dedicated Heat Recovery System, which directs heat generated from refrigeration equipment to be used to heat water in other parts of the building.
