UNMC develops H1N1 flu Web site for employees

Faculty, staff and students can stay informed about campus happenings as related to the H1N1 flu through a newly developed Web site.

The UNMC site — www.unmc.edu/flu — was developed to inform the campus community about the H1N1 virus and take necessary precautions to prevent or limit a flu outbreak.

“Our primary concern is to keep our employees and their families safe,” said Deb Thomas, associate vice chancellor for finance and business services. “The Web site allows us to share campus information with them, as well as provide quick links to helpful resources.”

In addition to the extensive pandemic planning over the past five years, the Web site is another facet to ensure the safety of faculty, staff and students, patients, visitors, health care workers and our community.

The Web site, produced by the Department of Public Relations, features:

  • News and updates;
  • Videos and soundbites,
  • Links to such local and federal resources as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Nebraska Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization;
  • UNMC’s pandemic flu experts; and
  • The disaster preparation guide for families.

To limit possible exposure and transmission of the flu, UNMC employees are encouraged to wash their hands often, cough into their sleeve and remain at home and not report to work if they display symptoms of the virus.

The symptoms of H1N1 virus in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with this flu.

UNMC, The Nebraska Medical Center and UNMC Physicians have developed a joint emergency preparedness Web site to provide a centralized location for a variety of emergencies, whether natural, bioterrorism or disease-related. Watch UNMC Today for more details of its pending launch.
