Schmit-Pokorny receives award from national nursing society

PITTSBURGH — Kim Schmit-Pokorny, nurse manager and case manager in the section of oncology/hematology, has received the 2009 Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Excellence in Blood and Marrow Transplantation Award.

The award recognizes her as an outstanding oncology nurse involved in blood and marrow transplantation.

“I am very honored to receive this award and I appreciate my transplant colleagues for nominating me,” Schmit-Pokorny said. “I thoroughly enjoy working in transplantation and consider my career to be very rewarding. I consider receiving this award to be one of the major highlights of my career.

“I am thankful for the opportunities I have been offered and plan to continue to contribute to the field of blood and marrow transplantation in the future.”

Schmit-Pokorny received her bachelor of science in nursing degree from Creighton University in Omaha, and her master of science in nursing degree from UNMC.

She is an active member of ONS, the Metro Omaha Chapter of ONS, and the ONS Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Special Interest Group. She also is a member of the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
