Lookin’ at U — Lisa Chudomelka

picture disc.Quick, think of five things others should know about you.

That’s the theme behind a series in UNMC Today called “Lookin’ at U.”

Each Thursday, we will randomly select a medical center employee or student to feature.

This week, we feature Lisa Chudomelka, administrative research associate in the department of internal medicine.

Here, in her own words, are five fun facts about Lisa:

  • I am the youngest of four adopted children. We grew up on a farm near Battle Creek, Neb., that is now a wetland preserve and a quail habitat reserve. My mom still lives there and runs a bed and breakfast right along the Cowboy Trail.

  • My most prized possession is my gray hooded sweatshirt.

  • I prefer to be outside. I like to fish, ride my bike, hike, play anything with our kids (Anna, 10, Tyus, 7), dig in the dirt and be near or on the water.

  • I love mountains and the best mountain trip I have ever taken was with my husband to a glacier-fed lake called Mollman Lake in western Montana. As we hiked to the lake, we kept thinking, “It’s just over the next crest.” Four hours later, I finally made my first cast. My lure got stuck under a rock so I rolled up my jeans and waded in to get it. I slipped on mossy rocks, flailed face down into the water and got really wet. There didn’t seem to be another soul around and I thought my jeans would dry better on a rock than on me — but when I turned around to get new shorts out of my backpack, some guy walked by. Weirdly, we saw two other people that day and bear tracks the size of my head. Very cool.

  • I am “trained” as a journalist and worked in print journalism in Nebraska City, Fremont and Lincoln before I came to UNMC. My last news job was at the Lincoln Journal Star where I worked as a sports copy editor and then a news copy editor. I even had the opportunity to edit a little (UNMC public relations’) Karen Burbach copy when she covered the education beat for the Journal Star.
