Rubens Pamies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean for graduate studies, presented testimony before the U.S. Civil Rights Commission on Friday.

Dr. Pamies was among 10 experts who discussed the reasons for persistent gaps in the health outcomes of minority and non-minority patients, particularly with cardiovascular disease.

Racial and ethnic minority groups often have a greater incidence of disease and mortality than non-minority groups. The panelists presented information about research, health system access, patient behavior, provider bias and other socioeconomic factors which affect patient populations.

Known for his extensive knowledge in health disparities and his “Multicultural Medicine and Health Disparities” textbook, Dr. Pamies also chairs the Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on Minority Health.
