INBRE Scholars on campus – meet Brandon Mizner

Twenty-six students from 10 different undergraduate and community college programs have joined the Institutional Development Award Program (IDeA) Networks of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE)/ Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (BRIN) program.

Established in 2001, the BRIN program was created to expose students to serious biomedical research, build a statewide biomedical research infrastructure between undergraduate and graduate institutions and to strengthen each undergraduate institution’s infrastructure and increase its capacity to conduct cutting-edge biomedical and behavioral research.

Today we meet Brandon Mizner.

Who is Brandon Mizner?

I am a psychology major from the University of Nebraska at Kearney who has aspirations of going into dentistry.

Has science always been a part of your life?

Yes and No. Growing up, the subjects that were within the realm of science always appealed to me, but I didn’t invest much time or thought into them. I was more concerned about participating in different athletic events and impressing my peers. It wasn’t until college that my passion for the sciences and conducting research developed.

How is it important to you?

My science courses have challenged me to be a better person because of the dedication that they require.

Why did you choose to participate in the INBRE program?

I chose to participate in the INBRE program because I want to develop myself as a scientist and student.

What do you hope to gain from the program?

I am hoping that at the end of the summer I will know if a career in research is right for me. Currently, I have no idea what the lifestyle of a primary researcher in a competitive field is like and I want to find out. Also, I hope to gain friendships with peers who are excited about their futures in the sciences.
