Lookin’ at U – John Hauser

picture disc.Quick, think of five things others should know about you.

That’s the theme behind a series in UNMC Today called “Lookin’ at U.”

Each Thursday, we will randomly select a medical center employee or student to feature.

This week, we feature John Hauser, UNMC’s safety manager.

Here, in his own words, are five fun facts about John:

  • I was born and raised in Omaha and grew up four blocks east of the UNMC campus.

  • My wife, Claudia and I have been married for 29 years. We have three children and a dog – Lisa, 27, Tom, 25, and Laura,.21. Sparky — our longhaired dachshund — is 17 years old.

  • I am a Mason and serve as an officer in Cobia Lodge No. 631, an officer in the Council Bluffs Chapter No. 441 of the Order of the Eastern Star and I am the Associate Bethel Guardian of Bethel No. 1 Council Bluffs Jobs Daughters International (a Masonic youth organization).

  • Since 1986, I have dressed up as Santa Claus and visited the patients in the hospital on Christmas Eve giving them a little gift from volunteer services. My Santa duties also have included serving as Santa for the transplant program and the UNMC Employees Christmas Party. Last year, I also served as the March of Dimes Santa and visited the neonates in the Intensive Care Units at The Nebraska Medical Center and Bergan Mercy Hospital. The last several years, my wife has assisted by serving as an elf or Mrs. Claus

  • I was hired as the University Hospital safety officer in 1983 and later the campus safety officer. During the merger, I became a hospital employee who still served as the UNMC safety officer. Last April, after 10 years as a hospital employee, I rejoined UNMC.

Read UNMC Today next Thursday to see who is featured in the next Lookin’ at U article. Who knows — it could be U.
