Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy, second from left, listens to UNMC’s Stephen Hinrichs, M.D., second from right, talk about a research project with 3M “N95” mask during a tour of the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory.

Also on the tour were, from left, Rubens Pamies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs; Peter Iwen, Ph.D., associate professor of pathology and microbiology; Mark Bowen, director of government relations, and Tony Sambol.

The Nebraska Public Health laboratory is a state-owned facility that is based at UNMC and directed by Dr. Hinrichs.

Sheehy – who toured the lab and the Sorrell Center during a visit to UNMC last week — was shown the capabilities of the lab such as the ability to test samples for various infectious diseases and chemical agents that could be used in bioterrorism.

“This is great. Dr. (Steve) Hinrichs and Tony (Sambol) take good care of us,” Sheehy said. “It makes me feel comfortable.”
