Longtime family medicine employee, Norma Marts, dies

picture disc. Norma Marts, a longtime employee in UNMC’s department of family medicine, died Thursday (Oct. 10) of a heart attack. She was 70.

Marts graduated from Nebraska City High School in 1950. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1950-51, receiving 32 hours of credit in secretarial studies. In 1974, she received her bachelor of science degree in home economics from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

In August 1981, Marts began working as a staff secretary III (temporary position) in the English department at UNO, where she worked under Gordan H. Mundell, providing secretarial support for up to 70 members (part-time and full-time personnel). Six months later, she worked full-time.

Marts transferred to UNMC on Oct. 15, 1984, as staff secretary III, and for 13 years supported many faculty members in the department of family medicine. She retired from the department on July 1, 1997. On Oct. 22, 1999, Marts returned to the UNMC department of family medicine to work on a part-time basis.

“Norma paid great attention to detail in her work,” said Michael Sitorius, M.D., chairman of the department of family medicine. “She touched many hearts, and will be missed.”
