Matthew Kelso, Pharm.D., Ph.D., assistant professor in the department of Pharmacy Practice in the College of Pharmacy, is among the many new faculty members at UNMC.

Name: Matthew Kelso, Pharm.D., Ph.D.

Title: Assistant professor in the department of pharmacy practice in the College of Pharmacy.

Interests: Dr. Kelso’s lab studies the biochemical and cellular processes that occur following a head injury, especially the changes in neurotransmission and inflammation. The goal of this research is to develop therapeutic agents that may help the brain recover following an injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be a devastating disease state with at least 1.4 million new cases in the United States every year at a cost of $56 billion. Between 2.5 million and 6.5 million people are estimated to be currently living with a long-term consequence of TBI, most often involving disturbances to a patient’s behavioral, emotional, social, motor and/or cognitive domains. To date, there is no approved treatment for TBI.

Doctoral degree: Pharm.D., UNMC; Ph.D., University of Kentucky.

Memberships: Rho Chi, Society for Neuroscience, and National Neurotrauma Society.
