Dr. Kirschner takes over as poison center director

Ronald Kirschner, M.D.

Ronald Kirschner, M.D., has been named medical director of the Nebraska Regional Poison Center.

Dr. Kirschner — an assistant professor in the department of emergency medicine — takes over for Jennifer Oakes, M.D., adjunct associate professor of emergency professor, who served in the position since 2007.

Specialty: Emergency medicine and medical toxicology

Medical degree: Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Bronx, N.Y.) 1986

Residencies:

  • Internal medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, (1986-89); and
  • Emergency Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1989-92).

Fellowship: Fellow in Medical Toxicology, Pennsylvania State University/Pinnacle Toxicology Center, Harrisburg, Pa. (2005-2007)

Memberships:

  • American College of Emergency Physicians;
  • American College of Medical Toxicology; and
  • American Academy of Clinical Toxicology.

The Nebraska Regional Poison Center is sponsored by UNMC and The Nebraska Medical Center and is one of sixty poison centers in the United States certified as a regional poison center by the American Association of Poison Control Centers.

The center (NRPC) is a free, 24-hour emergency telephone service designed to assess and give treatment recommendations during possible poisonings.

Center staff receive about 40,000 incoming phone calls per year and follow-up calls are made on a significant portion of total calls to the center.

Calls originate from both health care professionals and the public from:

  • Nebraska;
  • Wyoming;
  • American Samoa; and
  • The Federated States of Micronesia.
