Urgent information about the university H1N1 flu policy

The University of Nebraska has released important policy information for employees and students regarding the H1N1 flu virus.

UNMC officials urge all employees to familiarize themselves with the policy. Failure to adhere to the policy could result in disciplinary action.

A key point of the policy prohibits University of Nebraska faculty, staff and students from reporting to work or school if they have a fever greater than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit (38° C), combined with one or more of the following symptoms:

• Cough;
  
• Sore throat;
  
• Runny or stuffy nose;
  
• Body aches;
  
• Headache;
  
• Chills;
  
• Fatigue;
  
• Diarrhea; and/or
  
• Vomiting.

Faculty, staff and students who exhibit two or more of these symptoms should take the
following actions:

Notify supervisor/professors that they are ill and will not be able to work/attend classes;

Stay home for at least 24 hours after their fevers are gone except to get medical care (fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine);

Isolate themselves to keep from potentially exposing other people; and

Seek medical advice from your primary care physician or health practitioner.

Faculty, staff or students who display influenza-like illness symptoms may be sent home. Those who display symptoms and refuse to leave after being asked to do so may be subject to disciplinary action.

The university will not require a doctor’s note for faculty or staff to validate their illness or to return to work.
