Redesigned UNMC Connect now available online

Science is omnipresent. Start a car. Get a flu shot. Call a friend on your cell phone. Without science and technology, none of these activities would exist.

UNMC has been at the forefront of science literacy for more than a decade and its newest efforts to boost science literacy are highlighted in the latest issue of UNMC Connect, now available online.

picture disc.The cover story, “Boosting Science Literacy,” outlines the importance of a scientifically literate populace and how UNMC’s three new initiatives address those needs.

This issue introduces readers to the magazine’s new graphic design, which reflects the branding effort UNMC unveiled in mid-August.

The redesign — the first since the magazine was launched in the summer of 2007 — incorporates the brand elements of dynamic photography and UNMC’s new secondary icon, as well as new color and typography palettes.

“Readers will continue to find compelling stories of the people and activities that make UNMC such a vital player within our state,” said UNMC Connect editor Elizabeth Kumru. “The design helps us better convey that story and we welcome feedback from readers.”

The magazine is published twice a year by the departments of Public Relations, Alumni Relations and the University of Nebraska Foundation.

In addition to science literacy, the summer 2009 edition also highlights:

  • NBC chief medical editor Nancy Synderman, M.D., who graduated from UNMC in 1977;
  • Fourteen women who photographed their north Omaha community to identify resources and barriers to breast health;
  • The Hirschmann Prize for Teaching Excellence — an alum’s gift to recognize outstanding medical faculty members;
  • A new agreement between UNMC, med center alumni associations and the University of Nebraska Foundation that enhances UNMC alumni efforts; and
  • The Big Splash – the first recreational and competitive swimming fundraiser for the Munroe-Meyer Institute.

Individuals may pick up a printed copy of UNMC Connect from magazine racks placed around the UNMC campus. Individuals also may contact Kumru at ekumru@unmc.edu or 559-4691 with requests for copies or with story ideas. The next edition of UNMC Connect will be published in February 2010.
