Workshop to feature off-campus safety and home buying tips

UNMC Real Estate With Honors, the official off-campus housing listing service of the medical center, will host the free “Off Campus Safety and First Time Home Buyers Workshop” on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will be held in the west atrium of the Durham Outpatient Center and is open to all comers.

More about the program

Since its launch last April, new UNMC students, staff and faculty from 42 states and 20 countries have utilized www.UNMCRealEstateWithHonors.com to find off-campus housing and learn about living in Omaha.

The Web site contains information on relocating and buying, renting or selling real estate in the metro area. The site includes thousands of real estate listings, both on and off-campus.

For more information about Real Estate with Honors, call 402-932-1130.

The event is an open house format and will focus on off campus safety and crime prevention, and the soon-to-expire first-time home buyers’ federal tax credit. The event schedule is as follows:
  • 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. — Local real estate, mortgage and financing professionals will discuss the $8,000 tax credit, which expires Nov. 30;
  • 12:30 to 2 p.m. — Mike Kassebaum, a sixth-degree black belt and owner of ATA Krav Maga national training center in Omaha, will present a safety workshop and self-defense demonstration. Krav Maga is a practical self-defense system used by law enforcement agencies to protect their officers.

Kassebaum’s program will be broken up into several sections so people can stop in and learn as they have time. Crowd participation will be encouraged and talks will deal with awareness and safety at home, work or in the car.

In addition, more than a dozen participating companies of UNMC Real Estate With Honors will be on hand to answer questions and share knowledge in a trade show environment. Local service providers will include experts in areas such as:

  • Real estate sales and rentals;
  • Banking;
  • Mortgage financing;
  • Child care;
  • Relocation; and
  • Personal financial planning.

Refreshments will be provided at the event.
