Dr. Iwen to participate in NET panel programs on H1N1

Faculty, staff and students can stay informed about campus happenings related to the H1N1 flu through UNMC’s H1N1 Web site.

The Web site, produced by the Department of Public Relations, features:

  • News and updates;
  • Videos and soundbites;
  • Links to such local and federal resources as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Nebraska Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization;
  • UNMC’s pandemic flu experts; and
  • The disaster preparation guide for families.




LINCOLN — Peter Iwen, Ph.D., associate professor of pathology and microbiology at UNMC, will participate in a Nebraska Educational Television panel discussion on the H1N1 virus and how it affects families and the state as whole.

The panel will be part of the hour-long NET Television production “Flu Facts,” which will air initially on Monday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. CDT.

The show will be rebroadcast on Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 9 p.m. CDT and Thursday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. CDT on NET1 and NET-HD.

Dr. Iwen and other medical and public policy experts will discuss:

  • The medical science behind the virus;
  • What to expect during flu season;
  • What individuals should do if they catch the flu,
  • Vaccines; and
  • Implications for schools, businesses and other entities.

Other panelists include:

  • Dr. Susan Gourley, superintendent of Lincoln Public Schools;
  • Dr. Robert Rhodes, a Lincoln family practice physician; and
  • Dr. Joann Schaefer, Nebraska’s chief medical officer.
