Representatives of the Centers for Advanced Surgical Technology (CAST) will discuss the latest in surgical technology today at the 5th Annual Nebraska Research and Innovation Conference at Qwest Center Omaha.

Dmitry Oleynikov, M.D., and Joseph Ka-Chun Siu, Ph.D., will lead discussions during presentations by five CAST representatives.

The conference is an opportunity to showcase innovative surgical developments — such as surgical robots — that enable less-invasive procedures, less pain and faster recovery, said Dr. Oleynikov, director of CAST and of minimally invasive and robotic surgery at UNMC.

The CAST presenters and their program titles are:

  • Carl Nelson, Ph.D., assistant professor jointly appointed in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and the UNMC Department of Surgery, “Kinematic Design and Optimization Applied in Robotic Surgical Manipulation.”
  • Shane Farritor, Ph.D., associate professor in the UNL Department of Mechanical Engineering, “Miniature In Vivo Robots for Surgery.”
  • Jason Reynoso, M.D., a surgical fellow at UNMC, “Clinical Application of Robotic Surgical Technology.”
  • Linxia Gu, Ph.D., assistant professor in the UNL Department of Mechanical Engineering, “Modeling in Biotechnology and Medical Systems.”
  • Hani Haider, Ph.D., professor in the UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, “Image Guided Navigation of Freehand Operated Orthopaedic Surgical Instruments.”
