The Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute will sit at 40th and Leavenworth streets and bring cutting-edge ophthalmology treatment to the UNMC campus. The institute is funded by a gift from legendary UNMC ophthalmologist, Stanley Truhlsen, M.D.
Below are facts about the planned Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute, which pending approval from the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, will be constructed on the UNMC campus by 2012.

Purpose: Home to academic programs and faculty practice clinics of the UNMC Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.

Location: 40th and Leavenworth streets (on the north side of Leavenworth St.)

Cost: $30 million

Size: A 47,000-square foot building housing clinical services would be built first with a surgical wing added later.

Construction: Starts 2011, estimated completion in 2012.

Features:

  • Outpatient eye care;
  • Children’s eye care center;
  • Clinical research center;
  • Regional diagnostic center; and
  • Optical shop.

Building namesake: Stanley M. Truhlsen, M.D., emeritus professor and former chairman of UNMC’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.
