New look for UNMC Discover debuts this week

picture disc.UNMC researchers did more than attract $100 million-plus in research funding this past year, they built a momentum to double that figure in three years.

In the latest edition of UNMC Discover, now online and soon to be in the UNMC newsstands, readers will discover that what’s behind that number is nothing short of a phenomenal, 10-year growth in UNMC’s research initiative.

The fall 2009 edition also highlights:

  • Tsuneya Ikezu, M.D., Ph.D., and his quest for memory to help people with dementia;
  • Rod Markin, M.D., Ph.D., one of the most prolific inventors at UNMC;
  • How the ancient Chinese war strategies of Sun Tzu are used by Rob Lewis, Ph.D., to fight cancer;
  • How world-renowned pathologist Julia Bridge, M.D., is a true Sherlock Holmes in her field;
  • How bandages of the future will be squeezed from a tube thanks to the collaborative efforts of scientists from UNMC and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and
  • How tiny robots designed at UNMC will revolutionize surgery.

Readers also will notice the magazine’s new graphic design, which reflects the branding effort UNMC unveiled in mid-August. The redesign incorporates the brand elements of dynamic photography and UNMC’s new secondary icon, as well as new color and typography palettes.

Once again, video clips accompany some of the stories as Web extras, giving readers an opportunity to hear UNMC scientists talk about their programs.

The magazine — published twice a year by the departments of public relations, the vice chancellor for research and the chancellor’s office — also features an opportunity to learn more about the Metro Credit Union, the Nebraska Coalition for Lifesaving Cures and the national Research Means Hope campaign.
