Geriatric medicine headlines latest UNMC Connect

picture disc.Every eight seconds a baby boomer turns 60. But, critical shortages in geriatric health care professionals have stretched health care resources thin.

Inside the latest issue of UNMC Connect — now available online — you’ll discover how UNMC is training the next generation of health care workers for geriatric patients.

The issue’s cover story, “Helping Nebraskans live stronger, longer,” also highlights how the new Home Instead Center for Successful Aging, scheduled to open later this year, will help seniors age better and live healthier lives.

In addition to geriatric care, the winter 2010 edition highlights:

  • UNMC’s compassionate response to the people of Haiti following the Jan. 12 earthquake;
  • UNMC students whose service learning projects are far more than volunteer work;
  • A College of Nursing alum whose visit to Tanzania opened doors for families and children living at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro;
  • 25 years of second chances for one non-Hodgkin lymphoma survivor;
  • The ambitious fundraising campaign that will take UNMC to the top;
  • Naming opportunities for the new Center for Nursing Science;
  • 2009 alumni award recipients; and
  • How UNMC experts have reached 8.6 million viewers this past year.

Readers also will find a variety of Web extras, which range from photo galleries of images in Haiti and Tanzania to videos that answer commonly asked health questions.

UNMC Connect is published twice a year by the departments of Public Relations, Alumni Relations and the University of Nebraska Foundation.

Individuals may pick up a printed copy of UNMC Connect from magazine racks placed around the UNMC campus. Individuals also may contact Elizabeth Kumru at ekumru@unmc.edu or 559-4691 with requests for copies or with story ideas. The next issue of UNMC Connect will be published in August.
