Hal Mardis, M.D.

Hal Mardis, M.D., a clinical professor of urologic surgery, died Feb. 28 in Rancho Mirage, Calif., from complications of pulmonary fibrosis. He was 75.

Dr. Mardis — who had been a UNMC faculty member since 1965 — was a major innovator in urology, said George Hemstreet, M.D., professor and Malashock Chairman of Urologic Surgery.

Dr. Mardis’ contributions ranged from the development of an innovative urethral stent that greatly improved patient comfort to the formation of a urology practice plan that is now used in clinics throughout the state.

“He was a world-class innovator and contributor to endoscopic urology,” Dr. Hemstreet said. “He’s an all-time great.”
