The following is a list of recent achievements, activities and happenings involving UNMC staff, faculty and students:

Ward Chambers, M.D., coordinator of UNMC’s International Health and Medical Education program, continued UNMC’s ongoing support for health care in Afghanistan recently as he made grand rounds presentations at two medical schools — Maiwand and Ali Abad — and the country’s National Military Hospital. His presentations focused on preoperative assessment for non-cardiac surgery, and diabetes and coronary artery disease.

The UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery recently sent 24 people to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons meeting in New Orleans, where they:

  • Put on four podium presentations, seven poster presentations and one scientific exhibit;
  • Participated in five course lectures;
  • Spoke at several symposiums; and
  • Moderated two seminar sessions.

UNMC Seven Doctors Project members have had their poetry included in the “Filling the Empty Room: Poetry from the Series, November 2009” anthology. The anthology includes works from:

  • Rebecca Anderson, J.D.;
  • Andrew Jameton, Ph.D.;
  • Lydia Kang, M.D.;
  • Molly O’Dell, M.D.;
  • Bud Shaw, M.D.; and
  • Phil Smith, M.D.
