UNMC student receives Student Nurse of the Year award

The Nebraska State Student Nurses Association recently recognized Ashley Holdsworth with the Student Nurse of the Year award.

Holdsworth is a student at the UNMC College of Nursing in Omaha. The award is presented annually for leadership, professionalism and community service.

Born and raised in Omaha, Holdworth’s passion for science led her down the path to nursing. She enjoys the interpersonal aspect of the profession and hopes to continue to develop strong relationships throughout her career.

“Ultimately, that’s why I was sold on nursing,” Holdsworth said. “I wanted to be able to spend time with patients while still functioning as an integral part of the health care team.”

Holdsworth currently serves as president for the Nebraska Student Nurses Association UNMC chapter. During her term, she and other students have coordinated various community service events including Operation Santa at the Open Door Mission, an event in which diapers were distributed to hundreds of families in need.

“Ashley consistently exhibits excellence in all aspects of her role as a student nurse,” wrote one of her professors. “Her interpersonal style is one of calmness, compassion and genuineness.”

Another professor praised Holdsworth’s leadership skills and said, “We could not have found a better student to represent our college.”

After graduating in May, Holdworth hopes to work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at The Nebraska Medical Center.
