Regents approve Dr. Markin as interim medicine dean

The University of Nebraska Board of Regents on Friday approved the appointment of Rod Markin, M.D., Ph.D., as interim dean of the College of Medicine. The appointment is effective July 1.

Dr. Markin has been on the UNMC faculty since 1986 and has served as president of UNMC Physicians, the UNMC physician practice group, since 1997.

Under Dr. Markin’s direction, the number of physicians in the plan have more than doubled, the annual revenues have quadrupled and business efficiencies have increased by 100 percent.

“Dr. Markin has done an incredible job,” said UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D. “He has earned the respect of the entire campus. I have no doubt that he will continue this same excellence as interim dean. He has spent his entire career at UNMC, and there is nobody who is more committed or loyal to the medical center.”

Before the regents’ meeting, Dr. Markin’s appointment as interim dean received the unanimous endorsement of all the department chairpersons in the College of Medicine. In addition, the 12-member Executive Committee of the UNMC Faculty Senate also signed a letter of support for his appointment.

Over the past month, Dr. Markin has served as executive associate dean. He has worked closely with current Dean John Gollan, M.D., Ph.D. Dr. Gollan, 68, has served as dean for the past seven years. He will step down on June 30 and return to the internal medicine faculty.
